MALLORY MADDOX // ARTIST STYLE RECREATION — ‘Alberto Mielgo’ and the ‘Spider-Verse’ movies.

This piece took a total of 4 hours, and during that time I cross-referenced different concept works from artbooks of both ‘Spider-Verse’ movies. Using the artbooks, I replicated the use of hard and soft light, and the use of halftones and texturing. Halftones are not something I have used in my artwork before, so it was definitely interesting and an enjoyable challenge replicating the style. More of Alberto Mielgo’s work can be found here.

Mallory Maddox is an original character of mine, designed to fit within the universe of the movies when I wanted to replicate the style. She works at the fictional scientific research facility, ‘Alchemax’. A French born particle physicist, Dr Maddox is a moody, anti-social woman who lives to work. Long hours and a demanding job make her disagreeable and stubborn at best. Due to specific plot points in the media she is based around, she is involved in a massive workplace accident that results in her being permanently disabled and turns to a life of crime and vengeance against Spiderman.

Her nickname foreshadows her dark turn, as ‘mal’ in French is ‘evil’ or ‘wrong’, and ‘Mallory’ meaning ‘unlucky’.
She is a character near and dear to my heart, and I find her story cathartic. I suffered a workplace accident myself, which led me to pursuing my art fulltime, as opposed to a life of crime and fighting costumed teenagers.
