CHARACTER DESIGN — ‘Blackscale.’

For as long as I can remember, any sort of fantasy media (especially the kind with dragons) has fascinated me. The first book series I can remember reading cover to cover at the age of 8 was ‘Eragon’ and the subsequent books in the ‘Inheritance Cycle’. Dragons and horses were all I took to get me hooked, and since then not much has changed. With ‘Game of Thrones’ coming to mainstream media, and the popularity of ‘House of the Dragon’, I was inspired to design a dragon of my own. Enter Blackscale.

Native to a winding mountainous region, where storms were prevalent, they are from a genus of dragon that adapted more into flight speed, skill and agility. This is reflected with her two pairs of wings, and the ‘rudder’ feathers on her face and tail. The age old argument has always been that dragons have 6 limbs, and wyverns have 4, but I wanted to play around with the idea that dragons could have 6 limbs with still only having two legs.

I was inspired by the feathered dragon of the ‘Eragon’ movie adaptation (which is abysmal), and the variety of dragon body types shown in HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’.
